Simply Sweet Onion TM
The PA Simply Sweet Onion (PASS) is the only trademarked crop in Pennsylvania.
It was trademarked in 2002 by the Pennsylvania Vegetable Growers Assosiation.
The reason why the PASS Onion was trademarked is because growers in Pennsylvania
found an excellent way to grow onions so that they are sweeter than any
other onion on the market!
The secret to growing a much sweeter onion is very simple. The PASS Onions
are grown on raised beds covered with black plastic mulch and heavily
watered. Another reason why they are so sweet is because they are harvested
and sold immediately. The longer an onion is in storage, the faster it
becomes "pungent" (strong taste that makes your eyes water when
the onion is cut).
The PASS Onion is strictly regulated by PVGA:
- Must have a certified license by PVGA
- Every crop must be tested and passed with a minimum 6% soluble solids
(sugar level) before sold as PASS.
- Must be grown using plasticulture system
